Our work

IFI emphasizes that feminism must be grounded in human rights and take an intersectional perspective. Therefore, we seek to strengthen our work with a human rights approach as a long-term strategic priority. We aim to do this by:

  • Elevating relevant issues from an intersectional feminist perspective; participating in human rights monitoring and protection processes; and contributing to consultations and other related initiatives.
  • Collaborating with academic communities and other human rights organizations.

Background

IFI was established in 2022 to strengthen human rights as a foundation for feminist work, with the goal of bringing together and elevating feminist forces working for a democratic, diverse, and inclusive society.

In recent years, reactionary mobilization against gender and sexual diversity has gained increased traction, as part of a broader populist opposition to human rights and equality. This highlights the need to anchor feminist work even more clearly in a human rights perspective. In 2024, UN Women reminded us that “the feminist goals of intersectional justice and gender equality can only be achieved if all women and all LGBTIQ+ people are included as part of a broad, intersectional feminist movement rooted in the universality and indivisibility of human rights.”

IFI seeks to strengthen the foundation for this work, and to contribute to greater knowledge sharing, collaboration, and the building of long-term capacity for a broad and inclusive intersectional feminist movement. This is necessary to ensure a just, diverse, and democratic society grounded in the universality and indivisibility of human rights. Another goal of the project is to create meeting spaces for academics and organizations that work for equality and for the human rights of all marginalized genders. In this way, the project also follows up on one of the recommendations from the Equality Committee.

Expert Network

To strengthen our work for an inclusive feminism and human rights, IFI has decided to establish an interdisciplinary expert network, which we hope can become a platform for collaboration and the exchange of ideas. This work is still in the planning stage.
